When people see a new site ranking in days, they assume there’s a trick. There isn’t. There’s a filter. This post is the exact filter I use to decide whether a niche is worth entering — before writing a single word.
The core idea
Google doesn’t rank the best possible page. It ranks the best available page. In thousands of niches, the best available page is a five-year-old Quora thread or a 600-word template post — because no serious operator ever showed up. In those SERPs, showing up well is the strategy.
The five checks
1. Demand is real and rising
Search volume doesn’t need to be huge, but the trend should be flat-to-growing. A weak SERP on a dying topic is an empty room, not an opportunity.
2. Page one is undefended
Search your seed keywords and audit who ranks. Green lights: Quora, Reddit, forums, Pinterest, thin affiliate templates, sites that clearly haven’t been updated in years. Red lights: multiple funded brands, big publishers, or one site that obviously owns the topic.
3. The intent is poorly served
Actually read the top three results as a searcher. If you come away with half an answer and three pop-ups, note exactly what was missing — that list becomes your content brief.
4. The topic is coverable
Can one site realistically cover the whole topic well — 20 to 60 excellent pages rather than 600 mediocre ones? Weak SERPs reward completeness. If full coverage needs an army, pick a narrower slice.
5. You can be the best result on every page
This is the honest check. Less existing competition means less content to produce — but every piece must beat the current #1 on depth, accuracy, and usefulness. If you can’t clear that bar, the niche isn’t “easy” for you, whatever the SERP looks like.
Execution notes
- Coverage before promotion. Launch with the complete core, not one post and a promise. Topical completeness is what convinces Google a new site deserves the SERP.
- Use AI for speed, not judgment. AI (I use Claude) compresses research and drafting from weeks to hours. It doesn’t pick the niche, read the SERP, or hold the quality bar — that’s the operator’s job, and it’s the whole edge.
- Internal links are your only links. With zero backlinks, your internal structure does all the work of distributing authority. Plan it like it matters, because it does.
What happened when I ran this playbook
I found a niche that passed all five checks, built the site in a few hours with AI-accelerated execution, and watched Search Console show 1,830 clicks at position 3.6 within the first week — zero backlinks. The full breakdown, numbers included, is in the case study.
Stop asking “what’s the KD?” Start asking “who’s defending this SERP — and can I beat them?”
